A. INTRODUCTION
In the chemical industry, many production processes involve separating mixtures into their individual components. One of the most widely used separation methods is distillation. This technique separates liquids according to their different boiling points and is commonly used in laboratories and industrial plants.
Operating a distillation apparatus requires careful preparation, correct operating procedures, and strict safety precautions. Every laboratory technician or chemical operator must understand how to assemble the equipment, control the heating process, and collect the distilled liquid safely.
In this lesson, you will learn how to explain the operation of a distillation apparatus through a Procedure Text while improving your English communication skills and laboratory knowledge.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After studying this lesson, students are able to:
- Identify the purpose of a Procedure Text.
- Recognize its generic structure.
- Understand laboratory vocabulary in English.
- Explain how to operate a distillation apparatus.
- Apply laboratory safety procedures.

B. READING
How to Operate a Distillation Apparatus
Distillation is a laboratory technique used to separate liquids based on their different boiling points.
Before starting the experiment, make sure all equipment is clean and in good condition. Always wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a laboratory coat, safety goggles, and gloves.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
- Distillation flask
- Condenser
- Thermometer
- Heating mantle / hot plate
- Receiving flask
- Rubber tubing
- Laboratory stand and clamps
- Cooling water supply
- Liquid mixture
- PPE (Laboratory coat, gloves, safety goggles)
STEPS
Step 1: Put on your laboratory coat, safety goggles, and gloves.
Step 2: Assemble the distillation apparatus.
Step 3: Secure all glassware with clamps.
Step 4: Connect the condenser to the cooling water supply.
Step 5: Pour the liquid mixture into the distillation flask.
Step 6: Insert the thermometer correctly.
Step 7: Turn on the cooling water.
Step 8: Heat the mixture slowly.
Step 9: Observe the boiling temperature.
Step 10: Collect the distilled liquid.
Step 11: Turn off the heater.
Step 12: Allow the apparatus to cool.
Step 13: Clean and store all equipment properly.
